You may have heard the saying you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. This is an old Jim Rohn quote. I. had something similar. Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future. In both instances, they equate to who are your friends? Sometimes your friends may be fun to hang with but they actually are the anchors to your life. They will hold you back. When that happens it is time to upgrade your friends in your life.
This week I came across a video of Steve Harvey talking about this very instance. You have to upgrade your friends to upgrade your life. He explains why you don’t want to be the smartest man in the room. You know what you know but you don’t know it all.
Your old friends have the choice they can follow and upgrade themselves or they can stay in their current world. It may be sad but it is their choice. You can try to inspire them but if they want to try to pull you back into what they are comfortable with then you have to leave them behind.
What if they resent you for leaving them behind? But I don’t want to be sad? That is your choice you can still love them for who they are and leave them behind. If they want to feel betrayed that is their choice. You can’t stop them from feeling that. You can show them how wonderful it is on the other side of that discomfort but they have to choose to go to that side.
