What if we are talking about mental health too much? How can I say that? Well, look at the amount of depression and suicides that have been on the rise since we have started talking more about mental health.
Why?
Are we drawing too much attention to the problem? This is using the effect talked about by Robert Cialdini in his book Influence. When a news report talks about a significant suicide the suicide rates increase shortly after. With that line of thinking more people talking about themselves having poor mental health is causing other people to believe they have poor mental health also.

Maybe it is the sharing of our emotions in abnormal ways. Men are different than women. Men share their emotions and their thoughts differently than how women do. However, when we are to share our emotions, the experts have us share them as women do.

Maybe it is the artificial connections. With the rise of social media, we are having low-quality connections with other people instead of actually having good connections with people in person.

Maybe it is thinking that we are supposed to be happy all the time. And with the rise of knowledge that we are not happy all the time that we are actually happy 50% of the time and unhappy the other 50% of the time has caused us to think that we are depressed.
Are any of these right if I was to guess I think it was all of them.

What do I know?
I know that life is 50/50, or half the time is pleasure. The other half is pain. Now many of us want to believe that it’s closer to 80/20 which shows that we are resistant to the thought of the 50/50 principal.
I also have a feeling that our mental health doctors are too readily wanting to throw a pill at a problem then sit back and try to work the problem out. And the increase of suicides, and the increase of public shootings seemed to correlate with the amount of SSRI That are being prescribed.
what’s the answer? I really don’t know but I have would say that us talking about mental health all the time is it working? I think men need more connection. They need more friends and that would help go along ways on improving their mental health.
