Kevin Smith’s Mental Health Struggle And Victory

The Number one person who got me into podcasting was Kevin Smith. I watched and loved many of his movies, from Clerks to Mallrats to even Chasing Amy I enjoyed so many of Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse. I remember when he had his heart attack and listed to Smodcast back when it was at SmodCastle. Listened to many of his podcasts Some were great while others were not so great.

I had stopped following Kevin quite so fanatically that I missed that he was out of the limelight for most of the year 2023. So what happened? It appears that Kevin had a mental health emergency which I don’t know what that fully means, but I can take a guess or two.

Now this video is a longer one over 30 minutes but if you know anything about Kevin Smith you know he somewhere kissed the Blarney stone and has that gift of gab. So He can talk and he does.

Now the video starts out with him explaining where his trauma happened. Now I don’t subscribe to the modern definition of trauma but I am willing to concede that if it helps you to process the events in your life you can call it whatever you want. Yet if you turn to that trauma as a means of you being able to play the victim that Is a step too far. So I will hold my judgment on Kevin and his trauma for later and see if he uses it to heal. Which I believe he will.

Kevin has made many advances in his journey to better himself, at first it was out of necessity and understood but he keeps improving and getting past his limiting thoughts. Cause though his journey and me seeing it through the lens of a coach I have seen him hang up on the barriers he would approach. Like the time that he let the critic’s thoughts become personal to him around the movie Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Shortly after is when he picked up marijuana and became a wake and baker. You could see he was heavily buffering with pot. He was trying to smoke out the truth in his head and it affected him greatly.

He denied himself so much that he got to the point he needed treatment. You can hear the difference as Kevin talks he is more relaxed now and He is on his way to being an ambassador for his cause. He talks about the power of breathing and puts it in perspective that I will have to start using.

The big news is that he sees that numbing doesn’t help you. Thank you Kevin for all that you do. Guys sit a listen to what Kevin says. You don’t have to agree with all of it, but there are facts in what he says and truths too.
