How do you become present in the moment? The key that Mel Robbins points out is that you are thinking about what is happening now. You aren’t thinking of the past nor are you thinking of the future. You are thinking thoughts about what is happing at the moment.
The reason you want to stay out of the past is because the past brings depression. You are looking at what used to be. You can’t change the past you can only see what happened and wish that it was different.
You also can’t have your thoughts on the future because you will create anxiety and worry over stuff that hasn’t even happened. We, humans, are terrible prognosticators. We can look to the future but we rarely are ever right.
Yet when you can live in the here and now you find that you are able to find joy and happiness. Though joy isn’t the target. You want to find fulfillment. To find that fulfillment you want to be in the here and now. Not what was happening in the past and not what might be, but in the present.
